Featured Database: Fulton HIstory Full of Digitized Newspapers

Featured Database: Fulton HIstory Full of Digitized Newspapers
This is a wonderful yet odd database of historic newspapers. To quote reason.com, "Amateur Beats Gov't at Digitizing Newspapers: Tom Tryniski’s Weird, Wonderful Website"

The site, FultonHistory, is amazing in its own right, chock full of wonderful New York newspapers. But on top of that reason.com reports that the Library of Congress' historic newspaper site, ChroniclingAmerica, has 5 million newspaper pages on its site. In January, visitors to Fultonhistory.com accessed just over 6 million pages while Chronicling America pulled fewer than 3 million views.

Mr. Tryniski's site is free and even though he has been approached by big companies with proposals for partnership, he refuses all in order to keep his work free for all.

This site is well worth checking out. Be sure you take a peek at his wonderful online collection of old postcards too.

Thanks for reminding me about this site. My daughter is just beginning to research my husband's side of the family in Upstate New York. I think it will help her.

His site has been my #1 site for some time now, and helped me find so many wonderful stories, articles, obits, and more about my New York ancestors in the Syracuse area. Wonderful stuff! Amazing to see what one person can do, eh? Reminds me of Daniel Johnson's work on newspaper BMDs for New Brunswick. And then there's YOU with your Shipping Lists and so much more. Cheers!

My breakthrough of my brick wall came when I discovered this site. I've added many additional ancestors to my data base, all because of this wonderful site!

I so love Old Fulton Postcards. I have found so much information there that I have never been able to find anywhere else online. I have been able to find my Great Grandparents death dates (and hence their graves) only because of Old Fulton Postcards! I find it amazing that it is a free site. Thank you!

Quite a remarkable service he provides. Don't forget: there is a "Donate" page there - and every little bit helps.. There is also today [6/9/2013] a need for used hard drives. Be sure to look at the "a look into Old Fulton postcards" -- its quite an operation!

Tom is a genius and ended a decades old problem with his help to post the Portville, NY newspapers on his site. The local library and The Portville Historical and Preservation Society lacked the funding to get them on line and......along came Tom!! Thanks Tom!

I laud his commitment in keeping it free, despite offers that can definitely make the process easier for him. I hope that some people would approach him not for the profit, but to help compile and tag the digital copies of the newspapers to further ease the access to the various articles in the digital repository.
