Featured Database: Trove

What can I say? It's a Treasure Trove (pun intended) of goodies. Trove is one of my favourite sites for information on my Australian and English ancestors and branches.

I was pleasantly surprised to find mention of my Great Grandfather's death (he died in Ramsgate England) in a Sydney newspaper! I found quite a bit on my Stead and Simpson relatives and have only just begun searching. The onsite newspapers start in 1803 and go to 1954.

You can correct the text versions if you find an article about an ancestor, and of course, you can view the image of the actual article. Trove has many other genealogy and history items - maps, diaries, books...

So if you have English or Australian ancestors or connections, give Trove a try!

  1. Thanks for telling your readers about one of our national treasures - Trove trove.nla.gov.au is an initiative of our National Library of Australia.

It is helping lots of Aussies find interesting snippets on their anacestors' lives. So pleased that it is of use for information from "The Home Country".

My GGGrandfather lived in a small town whose newspaper is indexed - via Trove I have amassed a wealth of anecdotes on him.

What is wonderful about Trove are its collaborative features where users can register then halp with correcting the errors in the OCR text. Users can also add tags to various articles. Trove keeps in contact with users via social networking sites.

  3. Glad to hear that you had success with Trove, which I love! I must remember to check whether this notice was actually copied by NSW papers: Death notice for Sarah WEBSTER in The Times (London), 19 Jan 1881: '...Sarah, youngest daughter of the late Richard and Sarah GIBLETT, of Frome, Somersetshire, and... wife of George WEBSTER, of Shepherd's-bush, Middlesex. (New South Wales papers please copy).'
