My Genealogy Christmas Tree
Is it too early to put up my Genealogy Christmas Tree?
There is no tutorial. I just used WORD to create mine. You do have to play around with your surnames to get the tree sides to line up as you want them.
And I chose 4 letter surnames to make the trunk of my tree.
I actually just made another one for my husband's blog AncestorsAtRestwhere I did a better job on the star at the top.
For mine I inserted a star using a graphic program called GIMP. For my husband's I just inserted a photo into the word document that had his tree. It worked much better that way
Thanks Lorine! I started mine on Excel before I saw yourpost, but I think I reached the same end, just a slightly different path. https://www.flickr.com/photos/20814187@N03/15969912506/ THanks for the idea. Hope you don't mind that I "borrowed" it. Sara
I had no idea that we are cousins until I saw your Christmas "Tree"! I love the idea of the tree and may make one as well! Really cute. I am related to you on the Bradt/ Van Slyke line. My grandmother was a Bradt! https://www.facebook.com/TheGlamorousGenealogist
I want to let you know that your blog post is listed in today's Fab Finds post at http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2014/12/follow-friday-fab-finds-for-december-12.html
Paula & Lorine, Yours are so creative and attractive. Just a note to anyone else thinking of this - I made mine in Excel. I am not creative. According to family feedback, mine doesn't look like a tree, many people didn't "understand" it, as the names were sorted by size and not branches on the tree. My niece was angry that her ex-husbands name was included even though his name is a surname on my husbands side too. It looks like a Kindergarten project and is a total waste of time. Bah Humbug. I'm sure this is due to my implementation! Maybe next Christmas, I'll have a new family! Thanks for the idea! I liked it.
So, where is the blogger tutorial on how to make this? Did you use excel? I love it!

Forgot to say that once I created the tree in WORD I did a screen capture (selected just the tree) to create a graphic image for my blog

Lorine, I love this! Here's mine http://genealogy-quest.com/genealogy-christmas-tree/
ReplyDeletePaula, I love yours! So creative to make the letter "o" a coloured ornament.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about making the tree in layers like yours.
Hmmm... I may have to create a new Christmas Tree next year incorporating your ideas into my existing one!
Thanks for sharing
