Archives staff are indexing New Jersey's early tax lists (over 1,800 in all). The resultant database and digital files will eventually be posted for free use on the Archives' website. As most date from 1772-1820, they are vitally important given the loss of New Jersey's first 4 federal censuses.This is great news for those of us who have New Jersey ancestors pre 1800! I'll be anxiously watching their website for further updates

Maybe I will find my Ebenezer Ward who left in 1783. There are just too many to pick from. Maybe the process of elimination?
We may find Philip Chapman, a wool businessman, from London c 1745, died 1788.
