UK Outbound Ships Passenger Lists

Findmypast.com has just added another decade of records to the UK Outbound Passenger Lists currently available.

Records now include 7.5 million names in 50,553 ships passenger lists from 1890 to 1909. When it is complete, these Ships Passenger List records will cover 1890 to 1960 and are expected to contain more than 30 million individual passengers.

Tag, I'm It - Continued

As promised, here are the rest of the 5 things you probably didn't know about me (or as I think of it, things no one wants to know and I probably should never have told). The first 2 things I should probably never have told anyone are found here.

3. One of my hobbies is going to antique auctions, stores, flea markets and garage sales. I’m an avid collector. My collections include Snuff Boxes, Coffee Mills, Scales (General Store Candy scales, Hanging scales, Apothecary Scales, Postal Scales, etc), Civil War Era Photo Albums and photos, and much more! I had trouble deciding which of my collections is my favourite but I think it might be this double wheel coffee mill I found at an auction last year. My grandson is sitting beside it, so that gives you some idea of its size.

4. I am not a daredevil but I have several daredevil ancestors. My second cousin, 3 times removed (Stephen Peer) has the dubious distinction of being the only tightrope walker at Niagara Falls to fall to his death. In June 1887 Stephen outdid Blondin by walking across the Niagara River between the cantilever and suspension bridges on the smallest wire rope ever used - only 5/8ths of an inch in diameter. Three days later he fell to his death from the wire. Here’s a photo of my daredevil ancestor walking his tightrope over Niagara Falls.

5. Something else you might not know about me is that I paint – mostly watercolours – and have done some pottery and sculpting. I played French Horn in High School and our band made an LP record (remember them?) which I still have. I also learned to play classical guitar and recorders, and my husband and I used to play duets on Alto and Soprano Recorders – sitting high up on rocks on deserted islands on Georgian Bay.

My only small claim to fame is taking an art class with Canadian artist Sharon MacKinnon (when she was just starting out as an artist) and being taught watercolours by John Hartman

Tag! I'm it - here's 5 things you may or may not want to know about me

There’s a new game taking place among Internet bloggers. It’s a take on the game of tag that most of us played in childhood. If you are tagged, you're supposed to blog about "Five Things You Didn't Know About Me." Then you tag other bloggers.

It took awhile to think about what might be interesting or different enough to talk about, but here goes – 5 things you probably didn’t know about the Olive Tree Lady (and perhaps never wanted to know!!):

1. I have 8 grandchildren and step-grandchildren ranging in age from 1½ years to 17 years – and trying to get them all interested in genealogy has been a challenge. My 8 year old grandson Alasdair loves the Cemetery Challenge game I made up. Each summer when he and his younger sister Lilith come to visit, I give them each a large piece of paper with the name of one ancestor printed out. Then we drive to the cemetery where that ancestor is buried and we see who can find the grave first. A picnic in the cemetery follows. Of course we talk about the ancestor over our picnic lunch. Here we are at last summer’s hunt


2. I have a pet donkey (a Mammoth Jack) called Burr. His brother Ito died last year. I rescued them after they’d been taken from their owner because of neglect. Yes, put the two names together and see what you get…. Here is a picture of
Burr and Ito taken 2 years ago when we first brought them home – they are skin and bones in this photo but soon gained weight.

One Step Search Engine for Hamburg Ships Passenger lists

The Hamburg Immigration lists are online at ancestry. Steve Morse has created a one-step form to access those lists. It's the next-to-last item in the
"Other Ports" section of Steve's website.

One of the advantages of it over using the ancestry site directly is that you don't have to know as much German. Ancestry has dropdown lists for gender, marital status, and relation, all of which are in German. Those same dropdown
lists on Steve's site are all in English.

Steve Morse GOLD FORM for Ellis Island searches

Steve Morse has created a new Ellis Island search form (called the gold form) that is capable of searching through the entire 25 million passengers in the Ellis Island Database for ships passenger lists. Gold form can also search on every transcribed field.

This obsoletes the blue form that could search on every field but only for the 1 million Jewish passengers. It also obsoletes the gray form that could search for all passengers but only on four fields (name, age, year of arrival, and town).

The gold form has several new features as well. It is able to search on travelling companions (a feature which the blue form had but the gray form never did). Researchers are able to specify which fields they would like to see displayed on the results page. They can also specify how they would like to have the results sorted.

The gold form is prominently displayed in the Ellis Island section of the Steve Morse website.

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1922


Passenger lists (RG 76) were the official immigration documents from 1865 to 1935. The lists contain information such as the name, age, country of origin, occupation and destination of each passenger. The lists are organized by port and date of arrival.

This database provides access to passenger lists for the ports of Québec (1865-1921), Halifax (1881-1912, to 1922 shortly), to Saint John (1900-1912), North Sydney (1906-1908), Vancouver (1905-1912) and Victoria (1905 to 1912), shortly.

Lists are not searchable by passenger name

Complete 1851 Canadian Census Index online soon

The FIRST complete index for the 1851 Census for all of Canada will be available for searching on October 24, 2006!

This database will enable genealogists to search the 1851 Census of Canada by name, in addition to searching by location, with superior searching and viewing capabilities.

This is the first time a comprehensive index has been made available, making it possible to track down ancestors who have been impossible to find until now without searching through reels of microfilm.

Clues in an Ancestor's Military Photo

Question posted on Rootsweb.com mailing list September 26, 2006:

I have a picture of my father as a young man in WW1 uniform. He is sitting and another young man is standing. I have my father's "sign-up" papers from the Canadian Archives. Was it the custom to have photos of brothers taken at the same time. Would this type of picture been taken before they left for Europe or when they signed up and were in uniform.

My answer:

Traditionally it was very common for soldiers to have their photos taken in uniform before leaving for overseas (England). Usually a soldier was given leave to go home before being shipped overseas and that is often when these photos were taken.

If he had brothers, or a father or son who also enlisted, they would try to have a group photo taken. This was not always possible, as leaves for individual soldiers might not be in the same time period.

Many portrait studios such as Eatons, had template mats to enclose the photo. These mats were pre-printed had spaces to fill in the soldier's name, sometimes his unit plus other details.

These mats were often brightly coloured with the words "For King & Country" or "For Service in the Great War" (it varied). Ornate frames could be purchased which had the same wording. Sometimes there would be a Canadian Maple Leaf at the top which 'stuck up' beyond the edge of the frame

If there is no photographer mark on the photo (back or front) there are clues that might help you determine a date and place.

First Clue

Determine whether or not the soldier is in a Canadian or British uniform. I realize you obtained his records from the Canadian archives but both Canadian and British uniforms were used by the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force). Men were usually issued a Canadian uniform when they enlisted, and they kept this for everything done in Canada. After they arrived in England the Canadian uniform would almost always be switched for a British one. (The reason for this switch was that the British uniforms were better quality and lasted longer)

Here are a few of the differences that might help you determine if the uniform is Canadian or British:

1. Canadian uniforms had 9 buttons on front (7 on the actual front and 1 on each front pocket) but the British one had fewer, and they were larger. There is an exception to this - if the soldier was in a Canadian Highland Regiment, his top sometimes just had 7 large buttons

2. Canadian uniforms had pointed cuffs, the British had straight (horizontal)

3. Canadian uniforms (except for the Highland ones) had stand-up collars, British uniforms did not

Lost Faces - Photo Albums from Civil War Era

Welcome to a new corner of Olive Tree Genealogy. LOST FACES is my collection of Family Photo Albums. One of my hobbies is going to antique auctions, stores, flea markets and garage sales. Whenever I spot one of those old Photo Albums from the 1800s with family pictures, I have to buy it! I can't bear the thought that the album and photos will be lost or destroyed. Even though they aren't my ancestors, and they can be very expensive, I can't walk away without it.

Lost Faces is my way of saving these genealogy treasures and preserving historical documents. I am gradually listing all the albums I have saved, along with the list of photos and other documents (I have albums that contain funeral cards, memorial cards, obituaries, Christmas cards, and hand-written genealogies) and any research I've done on the family.

Library & Archives Canada has just released the 1851 Canadian census. It's searchable by location only. I have also put up a Census Comparison chart for the various Canadian census records found online.

Steve Morse has just added a Census Browser for 1790-1930 USA Census to the Census Section of his website at http://www.stevemorse.org/

It shows you what is on the microfilm for any given year and roll number. And if you have an ancestry subscription, it lets you view the contents
of any census roll given its roll number and year.

One Step Search Engine for 1911 Canada Census

Steve Morse has created another of his wonderful ONE STEP search engines -- this time it's for the 1911 Canadian census online at Ancestry.com

Steve's search engine searches many fields, not just the surname. As well the district field is a dropdown list that is populated when you select the province. So there is no need for a separate district name and district number field as Ancestry has.

Also there is no chance of mistyping or misspelling the district name when it comes for a dropdown list.

Moving Here, Staying Here Canadian immigration project coming online soon!

Library & Archives Canada have a work in progress presently named "Moving Here, Staying Here". The first part of the Moving Here project is scheduled to launch soon. It is a virtual exhibit about immigration to Canada from a government documents perspective, but LAC is adding some databases, too.

The one probably of most interest is the digitization of passenger lists, 1865 to 1922. It will have a searchable searchable database by date, ship and port (but not by passenger name) , with a link to the nominal database of Canadian Passenger Lists for all ports from 1900 - 1924 that the Nanaimo Family History Society is creating.

LAC also will have a nominal database and digitized images for the Montreal Emigrant Society passage book, 1832, the Ward Chipman papers (Loyalist lists), Upper Canada
Naturalization registers and one of the Chinese immigration registers.

LAC also plans a major revision and/or addition to the Home Children database.

Steve Morse ONE STEP Search Engines updated!

Steve Morse has just added two new One-Step pages to his website

Both are people-finder tools. One interfaces to the new Public Records database at ancestry.com, and the other interfaces to a similar database at privateeye.com. Both of these One-Step pages are in the "Births, Deaths, ..." section of his stevemorse.org website, and have link names of "Public Records" and "Birthdates and Related Persons" respectively.

The ancestry Public Records database allows you to search by name and address. The results it displays back include the birthdate, but ancestry does not allow you to search on birthdate. The One-Step form overcomes this and allows you to search on birthdate. In fact, you can search on simply the first name and date of birth -- a very powerful technique if you are looking for married women and you don't know the married name. Such a search is not possible if you use the ancestry site directly.

Middle initial is another parameter that the One-Step form allows you to search on but the ancestry form does not.

The privateeye.com database lets you optionally enter the birthdate as one of the search parameters. But they do not display the birthdates on the results page. Note that's just the opposite of what ancestry does. However if you search the privateeye.com database from the One-Step form, the birthdates will be displayed on the results page.

So you can use either of these two new One-Step page for finding people's birthdays. Of course Steve's original"Birthdays" One-Step page, which uses the anybirthday.com database, can also be used to find someone's birthday.

Irish Emigration Lists 1833-1839 online

New on Olive Tree Genealogy! Irish Emigration Lists, 1833-1839, Lists of Emigrants Extracted from the Ordnance Survey Memoirs for Counties Londonderry and Antrim are now indexed online.

The purpose of the Ordnance Survey of Ireland was to map the whole country. Each map was to have been accompanied by memoirs for every civil parish, but this was impractical and the idea was abandoned. Data was gathered for nineteen of Ireland's thirty-two counties, with the memoirs of Antrim and Londonderry the only ones with lists of emigrants.

These lists have been extracted and they identify the emigrant's destination and his place of origin in Ireland. The age, town and address, year of emigration, and religious denomination are given for each emigrant. This is an INDEX to these records with source information for obtaining full details

Names of Emigrants from the 1845-1847 Records at Montreal Quebec Canada

Another immigration database has just been put online. It is "Names of Emigrants from the 1845-1847 Records of James Allison, Emigrant Agent at Montreal"

From 1823 to 1849, James Allison was a government emigrant agent at Montreal, Quebec Canada. He was responsible for the provisioning and transportation of destitute immigrants from Montreal to locations mostly in Upper Canad (Ontario). There were
several Emigration Agents in Upper and Lower Canada, each was resonsible for assisting poor immigrants in finding employment, shelter, provisions and transportation to their final destination.

This database is an index to names (first and last) with information on where and how to obtain full details if you find an ancestor.

This helps to fill in the challenging early years of Canadian immigration so don't miss having a look if you have a missing ancestor in this time period. Many immigrants arriving in Canada were on their way to USA, as fares were generally cheaper coming into Canada, so this database may help those looking anywhere in N. America

Saturday, August 20, 2005 is Genealogy Saturday at the library of the Polish Museum of America, Chicago. The Polish Genealogy Society of America (PGSA) will have
experienced genealogists available at the library from 10 am to 1 pm for consultation. This is open to everyone.

The library and museum are in the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America at 984 Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago, just west of the Kennedy Expressway. There is plenty of free parking. More information and directions at PGSA

Steve Morse One Step Search Engines for new CastleGarden.org site

Good news from Steve Morse! He has set up a One Step Search Tool for the new castlegarden.org website

It's in the Castle Garden section of his website under the link "Castle Garden Passengers". There are two tools with that heading -- one that goes to the paid site ancestry.com and the other that goes to this new castlegarden.org site which is free.

Some of things you can do from the one-step site that you can't do from castlegarden.org directly are:

- You can specify all your parameters at one time.
- You can search on year of birth.
- You can search on the passengers age.
- You can specify how you want your results sorted.
- You can display more than 10 hits per page.

Steve also tells me that the castlegarden.org site lacks the ability to do either a starts-with search or a sounds-like search. So there is no way you can search for all the variants of your family name. But they have assigned PIDs (passenger IDs) to all of the records in alphabetical order. So Steve wrote another utility (a Castle Garden Browser) that lets you scroll through the records sequentially to see if names adjacent to the one you found matches your family. That browser is in the Castle Garden section of Steve Morse Website.

Castle Garden Website Launching Aug 1, 2005!

The Battery Conservancy is preparing to launch CastleGarden.org on August 1, 2005 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the immigrant depot at Castle Garden on August 1, 1855.

The electronic database project is led by Dr. Ira Glazier, former Director of The Center for Migration Research at The Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies and Immigration. CastleGarden.org will be a vital resource for the general public and for scholars interested in the history of immigration through the Port of New York.

I have a little corner of my website called Lost Faces. LOST FACES is my collection of Family Photo Albums. One of my little hobbies is going to flea markets and garage sales. Whenever I spot one of those old Photo Albums from the 1800s with family pictures, I have to buy it!

I recently found this Civil War era brass bound photo album in an antique store in Shakespeare Ontario. It is in beautiful condition and every photo except one is labelled! It is Canadian, and the families lived in Ontario. Some had roots in Germany, some in New Jersey

Almost every photo has names in spidery handrwriting. Surnames include Lee, Willson, Badenoch, Pepper, Shaver,Muma, Edwards, Blundy, Weaver, Clark, Lever, Green, Drake, Mannen, Bell, Jacobs, Heron, Kitchen. Locations include Brantford, London, Ingersoll, Little Falls New York

Most seem to be circa 1860s, 1870s, a few very early possibly late 1850s.

I did manage to find information on the folks in this album (burial records, census records, etc), and it is listed on my webpage along with the list of photos and
names.

Montville New Jersey Church Records online

The Montville Reformed Church started in old Boonton about 1756. About 1818, the church moved to Montville/Persepeny to be more centrally located, and it incorporated Dec. 18, 1818 as the First Reformed Dutch Church of Montville. Thanks to Kevin Riley for generously transcribing and donating the Reformed Dutch Church of Montville Marriage Records from 1826 to 1873.

Upper Canada Land Books Help you find Ontario ancestors

Land Books go hand in hand with Upper Canada Land Petitions (UCLP). In effect, the results of the petition were recorded in the Land Books. Thus, if you have the petition(s), from UCLP, then there will be next to nothing in the Land Books for that petition. Sometimes there is, but that is rare.

You don't usually find a Land Book reference except in the index to Petitons (UCLP index)

The only time I've found the land books to be quite worthwhile is when a petition has not survived. Then you can at least find out if your ancestor was awarded land by referring to the Land Books.

Shelagh Rogers) on the Sounds like Canada radio program.

Mennonite Genealogy in Berne Indiana

David Habegger of Newton, Kansas, a genealogist and historian who with Karen Adams co-authored "The Swiss of Adams and Wells Counties," will be speaking in the Heritage Room of the Berne Public Library at 1:30 P.M. on August 8.

He will tell about his current research on the Kleintal Gemeinde (congregation) that consisted of Anabaptist/Mennonite residents who mostly lived on the Munsterberg/Montagne de Moutier, the Greitery, the Chaluet Valley, and the community around Moron. Most of the Mennonites who came to Berne, Indiana in the 1800s were members of this congregation. In 1832 there were 143 Anabaptist families living in the area, all of whom were from the Emmental of Canton Bern.

Habegger will tell of the beginning of this congregation, name some of the prominent families who were members of this congregation, and the ministers who served. The sources for his research will be mentioned for any who wish to do research.

It is the hope of Habegger to have the results of his research published so that descendants will be more aware of their history.

While pre-registration will not be necessary, the Heritage Room would appreciate an approximate count of those intending to come to this meeting. Contact the Heritage Room at 589-2575, or heritage@bernepl.lib.in.us.

Now you can't even get to their search form -- you get a page-not-found error instead. And when you go to their partner site, locateme.com, you get a message saying that their domain registration has expired.

That means that my one-step form which obtains its data from anybirthday.com no longer works. But the good news is that I've found another source for the birthday data and created a one-step form for it. You can find that one-step form in the Births and Deaths section of my homepage.

There are two links for birthday forms there -- one to the now-defunct anybirthday.com and the other that uses this new source.

The bad news is that this new source requires the full first and last name. Partial names are not permitted and the first name is no longer optional. So it's no longer
possible to find potential relatives by searching for everyone having your surname.

Canadian Passenger Lists Index 1908-1910 online

The Nanaimo Family History Society has been indexing passengers lists to Canada and have included the indexes on their web site. The index now covers Quebec Ports for the periods 2 Jul 1908 to 2 Oct 1908, 25 Jul 1909 to 26 Apr 1910 and 17 Sep 1910 to 13 Oct 1910.

Search the Index to Ships Passenger Lists. The indexes are in Portable Document Format (pdf) and require Acrobat Reader to view them.

Finding Naturalization & Citizenship Records USA

Naturalization is the granting of citizenship to non-American born residents. Immigrants may or may not have applied for citizenship. How do you find these records?

Before 1906 these records rarely provide an origin or parents' names. After 1906 the records are more detailed.

Sometimes applications were not completed, but the papers might have been filed. You can also look in census records, court records, passports, voting registers, homestead records and military records for proof of citizenship.

Ontario Land Records - Using the CLRI

The CLRI (Ontario Land Records Index) cateogorizes entries as:
Name of Locatee
Residence
Township/Town/City
Lot/ Conc/Date I.D.
Issue Date
Transaction Type
Type FG (Free Grant)
Type of Lease/Sale
Archival Reference (RG, Series,Volume, Page #)

This is very helpful as the Date ID can lead you to other sources - for eg. a Date ID of 8 means that an OC (Order in Council) was given and this means a petition or petitions are on file for the individual. These petitions are often a wealth of information!

The Archival Reference leads you to the original entry from which the CLRI was made - sometimes this has a great deal more information, often it does not.

Type of FG (Free Grant) can be helpful - was it M (Military), or UE (Loyalist) or SE (Scotch Emigrant) or ..... There are many types of Free Grants, each has its own avenue of research.

To give an example, let's look at Reuben Bisbee in London.

Here is the actual CLRI entry (under the categories I listed above):

I'll translate :-)

Reuben Bisbee of London, received a Free Grant (paying Full fees) for north half of Lot 1, Conc. 14 in London Twp on 1848/02/09. An OC was issued (this means there's a petition on file in the Upper Canada Land Petitions) Archival Ref is 01 C13 volume 350 p. 92

I have conversion tables online to convert the Archival Reference to a Microfilm Reel. To see the petitions you will have to get the UCLP indexes (Upper Canada Land Petition indexes) first then convert to the microfilm reel for the details and the petition itself.

Full fees means Reuben qualified for a free grant of land under some condition (probably listed on his petition envelope) but had to pay administration fees.

Armed with the lot and conc # you can now check the Abstract Indexes to Deeds for that piece of property and find out who owned the land AFTER Reuben! The CLRI only
shows the first land owner who got the land from the Crown - - so any succeeding landowners are not given.

1911 Canadian Census should be online by early August

Bill S-18 has now received Royal Assent. Under this amended legislation, personal census records for censuses taken between 1911 and 2001 will be made available through Library and Archives Canada 92 years after each census took place.

Library and Archives Canada has received the official transfer of the 1911 census records from Statistics Canada. The 1911 Canadian Census should be online and searchable by genealogists in by early August.
