New One-Step Search Engine from Steve Morse

Steve Morse has created another one-step search form for family researchers on his website.

Steve's latest One Step is for the Montreal City Directories . . . "Annuaires Lovell de Montreal et sa banlieue" a free online database located at the National Library of Quebec "Bibliothèque National du Québec," containing digitized copies of Montreal city directories from 1842 to 1977, and criss-cross directories from 1974-1992.

Go to the "Births, Deaths, and other Vital Records" section of Steve's website and scroll down to the fourth entry from the end.

The advantage of the One-Step is that you can search for your ancestors name,
year by year, without having to do all the navigating and clicking that you have to do when doing such a search from the website directly.

Dating Ancestor Photographs Before 1900

If you are lucky enough to have an ancestor photograph or family photograph album, you can date it according to the type of photograph.

Daguerreotypes (ca 1839)
Photography in USA began circa 1839 but not many are found before 1854.

Ambrotypes (circa 1854)
The ambrotype was a glass negative backed with black material so it appeared as a positive image

Tintypes (ca 1855)
The Ferrotype process (tintypes) was introduced in the United States in 1855. It substituted an iron plate for glass and is one of a kind. No copies could be made from a tintype.

Carte de Visite or CDVs (ca 1859)
CDV stands for carte de visite. CDVs replaced ambrotypes, producing a card 2.5 by 4" CDVs arrived in the United States around 1859, on the eve of the Civil War (1861- 1865). On June 30, 1864 a tax on photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes and other "sun-pictures" went into effect. Tax Revenue Stamps had to be placed on the backs of photographs from that date (1864) until August 1, 1866. This helps date CDVs taken in this time period.

Cabinet Cards (circa 1870)
CDV´s were replaced in the 1870s by Cabinet Cards which were on a larger 4 by 6" card.

This is an exact digital copy of the original document that was published by the Federal Government in 1821. It covers the arrivals in 35 ports in 14 states and the District of Columbia.

A typical entry gives the passenger's name, age, where they were coming from, and their destination, the name of the ship, ship's captain and the port. Some entries also include additional notes.

This published passenger list gives the names of all passengers arriving in the US between October 1819 and September 1820. It includes not only immigrants coming to
the U.S. but also a large number of U.S. citizens who were traveling by ship from one part of the country to another.

This is a compilation of the twenty-eight earliest census records of Louisiana. These census records cover Fort Maurepas, Biloxi, Mobile, Natchez, New Orleans, and other locations. The records are both civilian and military and they cover from 1699 through 1732.

Besides census records, there are lists of 1,704 marriageable girls, a 1726 list of persons requesting negroes, landowner lists, and a list of persons massacred at Fort Rosalie in 1729.

Other features include a synopsis of Louisiana's colonial history, tips on French colonial naming practices, and a comprehensive index of 5,000 names.

Utah Death Certificates Now Online

FamilySearch, in conjunction with the Genealogical Society of Utah and the Utah State Archives and Records Service, announced that the state's free online index to death certificates is now linked to original images of the historic documents.

The integration of the index with free digital pictures of the death certificates issued from 1905 to 1954 by the state will open doors to additional information for family historians and genealogists with Utah ties.

The online index to 250,000+ Utah deaths was created by the State Office of Vital Records and Statistics and has searchable information limited to the name of the deceased person, their date of death, sex, and where they died.

Ellis Island Immigration Hearings

From 1892 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. Last Friday, March 30, the processing station once again opened its doors to immigrants .

Over 150 immigrants, including 30 members of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR), attended a hearing organized by the House immigration subcommittee to discuss the issue of 12 million undocumented immigrants presently in the USA.

The statue of Annie Moore, the 15-year old from Cork Ireland who was the first immigrant through Ellis Island in 1892, stands nearby.

Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, the California Democrat who is chairperson of the subcommittee, thought it apt to hold the first of several planned hearings at Ellis Island, where over 40 percent of Americans can trace their roots.

Finding American Naturalization Records

Many Declarations (not the Petitions) have an exact date of immigration. Be careful to look for all records in the Naturalization Process: Declarations of Intent, Petitions and so on... for each contains different information.

Before 1906, the declaration of intent generally contains more genealogically useful information than the petition. Petitions before 1906 usually show only a name, former
allegiance, and date of naturalization. The declaration may include the alien's exact date of immigration into the United States

An immigrant who arrived after June 29, 1906 could not naturalize until the government located their immigration record (a passenger list). Petitions (not the Declarations) after 1906 have information that has been verified and matched to an immigration record. In fact a a certification of the immigrant's arrival record was a required part of the process

The easy way to remember is to think of opposites: BEFORE 1906, the Declaration has more useful genealogical info than the Petition (usually) and AFTER 1906 it's the opposite - the Petition is more useful and accurate than the Declaration

Between the years 1847 and 1851 over 5,000 people left County Down, to escape the ravages of the Famine and to seek out a better life for themselves and their family.

Brigitte Marmion has transcribed and donated Passenger Lists for ships sailing out of Newry. These provide a census substitute for the time period.

Understanding & Using the US-Canada St Albans Border Crossing Records

My friend Sue Swiggum of TheShipsList wrote out this explanation which she gave permission to publish on Olive Tree Genealogy Blog

The different types of border records require a different approach, so researchers will be learning as they go. These will also be a great asset for finding US destined passengers on the recently uploaded "Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1922" which are unindexed.

Using the CANADA-US border records (St. Albans Lists) researchers will find ship name and date of Canadian sea-port arrival, so they'll have the records kept by two
countries, however, remember the border records only begin with 1895.

M1461 and M1463 are the Soundexed cards, card manifests,most commonly used. And from about 1927 to 1954 those cards are the actual border record. In those years, if the immigrant was coming directly across the border from a steamship arrival, the card relates to a ship list. The actual ship lists are on M1464 (Atlantic ports). So for the years ca. 1927 to 1954 there are two cards for those transiting Canada--a ship list and a border card manifest. For those coming from Canada in those years there is just the card manifest.

But for the earlier years, 1895 to 1927, the Soundex card manifest from M1461 is an abstract of information taken from a Border port list. The cards were made in the early 1940's by INS to make reference easier (searching by name rather than by year, month, port). The original border port record was a land border port list. These are inter-filed with the ship lists on M1464.

The point is that for the earlier years, 1895 to 1927, there can be three records for a transmigrant.
1. The Soundex manifest card.
2. The border port list from which the card was later made.
3. The ship list showing their arrival at the Canadian port.

If the immigrant is coming from Canada then there are just 2 records--the port list and the corresponding card.

I won't delve in to some of the confusing aspects which some people might encounter, but will attempt to answer queries to the TheShipsList@rootsweb.com mailing list on a case by case basis.

US Canada Border Crossing records online!

Ancestry.com has added more than 4 million names of individuals who crossed the U.S.-Canadian border between 1895 and 1956. These records add to their Immigration Records Collection, which also includes more than 100 million names from the largest online collection of U.S. passenger lists, from 1820 to 1960.

In 1895 Canada and USA established a joint inspection system. Passengers arriving in Canada who intended to go on to United States were inspected by US Officials at the
Canadian Port of Arrival, then enumerated on US immigration lists. Immigrants were also given inspection cards which they turned in to US Officials once they were on board trains going to United States. Two sets of records were created - passenger lists and compiled inspection cards.

These CANADIAN BORDER CROSSING records were microfilmed by INS. They cover 1895-1954 and are indexed. They do NOT include Canadians before 1906. After September 30, 1906 both Canadians and non-Canadians are included on these lists.

Finding Ancestors in Medical Records in Ontario

Medical Records in Ontario are held in various places - some are at the Ontario Archives, others are with the original institution.

To obtain these records, you should begin with the Ontario Archives. Find out what they have, and then how to request it. For example, Queen Street Hospital in Toronto has records that go back to 1839. There are nineteenth century records for institutions in London, Hamilton, and Kingston and from Penetanguishene from 1904.

Files less than 100 years old are restricted under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Requests for access must be submitted in writing to the
Access Unit of the Archives of Ontario.

Files created in whole or in part on or after 6 April 1954 are restricted under the Mental Health Act. Requests for access to records in Archives' custody must be submitted in writing to the Administrator of the appropriate psychiatric hospital.

The WPA (Works Project Administration) indexed names for New Orleans Louisiana passengers. Vols. 1, 2 and 3 of the 6 volumes they prepared are found on microfilm M2009 from NARA. It covers the years 1813-1849. Vol. 5 is missing; Vol. 4 & 6
have not been filmed.

Shame on Viewpoint!

I still haven't heard back from Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics website re incorrect images being linked to their searchable index, but it's only been 5 days since I reported the problems.

However I want to warn everyone about the Image Viewer you must download and use to view the images of the records. It's Viewpoint Media Player and you must install it to see the online images. I installed it on Tuesday when I first went to the site. It works great, that's not a problem. BUT two days later, I turned on my computer and a popup window informed me that Viewpoint had an "update" and asked if I wanted to install it. I thought the update would result in even clearer images so I clicked on OKAY.

Imagine my surprise a few minutes later to be informed that Viewpoint TASKBAR was now installed on my browser. I didn't want their Taskbar, I use the Google Taskbar. I had refused it once already. But here it was and I was also sitting on the Viewpoint home page (not my choice).

I tried opening a second browser window but it flashed on my monitor and closed. I tried going to another website and could not. The so-called "update" was nothing more than a sneaky way to get me to take the Viewpoint Taskbar.

I was annoyed but immediately went to my Windows Add/Remove Programs icon, found Viewpoint and removed it. Gone. Next surprise -- I opened a second browser window and the Viewpoint Taskbar was back! I went back to Add/remove -- the Viewpoint files were back. I removed them again. The same thing happened. This went on several times until I was finally able to remove the unwanted Viewpoint Taskbar permanently.

I wasted a lot of time getting rid of something I didn't want in the first place. And to the skeptics, no, the popup did not advise me that the Taskbar was going to be installed. At no time did I get an opt-in or opt-out choice.

Shame on Viewpoint! That's very underhanded!

Ships Passenger Lists to New Netherland (New York) 1624 to 1664 online

All "passenger lists" for travel from The Netherlands to New Netherland 1654-1664 came from information on the debit side of the West India Company Account Book. They show who owed money when they arrived. This account book is found in New Netherland Colonial Mss, vol. 14, Book KK. Finding ancestors on Pennsylvania Ships Passenger Lists

Pennsylvania ships lists have been kept, and are on microfilm, as far back as 1800 (1820 was the first year it was a requirement that they be kept)

There are indexes you can use to search for an ancestor. See a complete list of film numbers for ships going to Pennsylvania after 1820 Find the film you need and write down the
NARA or Family History Centre film number you need. Then you can order the film in to your nearest FHC or have NARA do the lookup for you.

If you want to try your luck ONline, there is a custom search engine that will search most Internet sites with ships going to Pennsylvania. Choose PENNSYLVANIA from the state choices. Scroll down to the yellow search engine.

The Philadelphia Baggage Lists for 1809 are also online. They include images of the actual manifest and a
transcription of the names of the passengers on board. These are the names of passengers with luggage! If your ancestor had no stored luggage, his name will not be found.

Nova Scotia Vital Records Online

The Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management has a new website.

Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics

It includes a fully searchable database containing one million names. Every name is linked to its original record from the following options:

Births 1864-1877
Marriages 1864-1930
Deaths 1864-1877 and 1908-1955

I spent a few hours on the website looking for my daughter-in-law's family. There were problems which I'm sure will be fixed as the weeks progress. But I did find quite a few incorrect images linked to the index record. There is no way to scroll forward or backward through the images displayed, which I consider a major drawback. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy these are online! But it's very frustrating to not be able to get to the correct image once you've found your ancestor.

The website was excrutiatingly slow (yes, I'm on dialup but even for dialup it was bad) and intermittently would glitch when I clicked to go back or to do a new search - dumping me back to the start page or displaying previously searched for names. So, patience is required! But I did find some terrific records for my daughter-in-law.

I wrote to the Support Desk to report all the glitches I found. They promise a response within 10 days so I'll post here to let everyone know what happens.

CEF Soldiers of the Great War Database

Soldiers of the Great War (WW1) is an online searchable database for members of the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force)

Scanned Attestation papers (front and back) are available but it is important to realize that the Attestation papers are not the full record.

You should send for the full records of soldiers. Just provide the index entry or write to LAC with the names, dates and places of birth, parents'names and where they lived (which would hopefully be near where they signed up)

You can mail or fax your request plus your credit card number for the charges (very reasonable) I always fax as it is much quicker.

Searching Land Records - Township Papers

Township Papers in Ontario are a miscellaneous group of land-related records have been arranged by township name, then by concession and lot or by town name and lot number. They're a mixed bag - they may contain correspondence re land, some
petitions, copies of orders-in-council, etc

Finding Ancestors in Land Books in Ontario

Land Books in Ontario are basically a summary of land grants. They rarely contain more info than name, date and location. Sometimes they have little gems in the comment section.

But they're helpful because if you can't find a petition in the Upper Canada Land Petitions (UCLP) it may be in the Land Book so at least you have some record of the event.

The Upper Canada Land Record Books record the minutes of the meetings of the Executive Council of the Land Board which were held between the years 1791 and 1847. Petitioners for land were settlers, military claimants, and Loyalists. Land Books are the Orders-in-Council issued by the Lieutenant Governor, authorizing the sale, lease or free grant of crown lands to petitioners

New England Ancestors is offering free access for a limited time to their Irish databases.

These include Atlases, Maps and Reference Materials; Census, Tax and Voter Lists; Church Records; Newspapers and Periodicals and Societies and Organizations.

Upper Canada Land Petitions - Finding an Ancestor

 Upper Canada Land Petitions are the actual Petitions for land which were submitted in Upper Canada (Ontario).

Here is an actual 1797 UCLP (Upper Canada Land Petition) for one of my ancestors. In the petition, the petitioner gives his father's name, the date he (and his father) arrived in Upper Canada (Ontario) and specifics of his family (wife and children). He requests land, and the outside of the folded petition reveals if that request was granted (a land grant) and under what terms.

These land petitions frequently contain information about the petitioner and his or her family. Loyalists and discharged soldiers often mentioned the regiment in which they served. To find an ancestor you must first consult an index, then convert your findings to a microfilm reel with the full petitions. Land Records in Ontario - Using the CLRI

Land records are very useful. Originally all land in Ontario belonged to the Crown. Although there were small areas of settlement in 1763 after the British took over, major settlement of Upper Canada began in 1783 and utilized Crown Grants. See Ontario Land Records for more help

The CLRI (aka Ontario Land Record Index) is an index which summarizes land grants from sales of of Crown Land in Ontario, from Canada Company sales and leases, and from Peter Robinson settlers' grants. It provides invaluable clues for further research!

The CLRI only shows the first time owner of Crown Land so if your ancestor purchased land from someone else his/her name will not show on this index but it is still a very useful tool. Not only does it provide you with exact location (township, lot #, conc. #) it provides you with a date of transaction, whether or not there were special circumstances surrounding the transaction (a free grant, a hardship grant, a military grant, etc), and it provides you with an Archival Reference number. This AR number can provide more detail; often it does not but it is still a stone that should be turned.

With a date of transaction you have narrowed the field for immigration.

Beyond that the value of the CLRI is in the interpretation of the one line index entry -- which can lead you to other avenues of research.

Fiske Family Civil War era Photo Album

One of my hobbies is buying old (Civil War era) Photo Albums and photos. I like to figure out who the family members are, do some genealogy research on them and then put the albums online. It's an expensive hobby but I love it.

A few days ago I had a nice surprise. A gentleman from New Hampshire (unknown to me) sent me a gift of an old Civl War album of the Fiske family in New England. There were only 13 pictures and the photo pages were torn but the photos themselves were in good condition and labelled with names.

I spent a few hours doing some research and discovered that the photos all have some relationship to the children of David Fiske and Laura Severington. My research and the photos (not thumbnails, the full size photos) are all online now for descendants to enjoy.

Should Unsourced Data Be Put Online?

My friend Illya D'Addezio and I were recently discussing whether or not data that has no source has any place online on websites.

Back in 1996 when I started Olive Tree Genealogy, I didn't think about the importance of sources for data I found and brought online. So if I found a ships passenger list, I typed it up and put it online. I didn't worry about including the reference or citation for the original source.

In later years I became fussier and started documenting all data brought to Olive Tree and any of its sister sites. For example my New York Almshouse Records 1819-1840 on Olive Tree Genealogy include full details of

• the source I used (Source: Alms House Admission Foreigners & Nativity Records (New York; City, NY) Item 5 LDS Film 1304647 Bond Registers 1819-1840. Original records in the Municipal Archives, New York, New York)
  
• my introduction to the records
  
• my notes about the records (that there are 2 pages but my transcribers and I only transcribed one)
  

The question Illya posed was "Does this mean that unsourced material has no place online?"

My response, after some serious deliberation, is that unsourced material, while not the pick of the litter so to speak, does deserve a place online. Yes, fully sourced material is always the optimum. But if one has the opportunity to obtain unsourced data, it can still be useful to genealogists, if for nothing more than a clue. A tiny clue from a page ripped from an old bible (unsourced, origin unknown) might be the clue that leads us to facts, to sources that will either verify or disprove the original clue.

So my vote is YES. I'd love to hear from others on this topic.

Russian Immigrants to Canada 1898-1922

The Likacheff-Ragosine-Mathers collection (LI-RA-MA) contains documents created between 1898 and 1922 by the consular offices of the Russian Empire in Canada.

The series on passports and identity papers contains about 11,400 files of Jewish, Ukrainian and Finnish immigrants who came to Canada from the Russian Empire.

The series includes passport applications and questionnaires containing general information and is searchable online.

Obtaining Copies of 1871 Ontario Census

Canadian Census records for 1871 are available to the public. They give information on all household members - name, age, gender, country of birth, religion, ethnic origin, occupation, marital status and education.

There are 9 returns for the 1871 census but there are 3 that are of the most help genealogically:

Schedule 1: Return of the Living
Schedule 2: Return of the Dead
Schedule 4: Agricultural Return

Census records are available on microfilm from the Archives of Ontario, National Archives of Canada, on ILL (InterLibraryLoan) through a local library, or from your
local FHC (Family History Center).

You can search the free 1871 Ontario census index to heads of household at Library & Archives Canada

If you find a name of interest, you can order a copy of the census page from the National Archives. Requests for copies must include complete references

Descendants of Signers of Flushing Remonstrance 1657 New Netherland (New York)

The historical Bowne House in Flushing, Queens New York is looking for descendants of Peter Stuyvesant, his sheriff Resolved Waldron, and signers of the Flushing Remonstrance of 1657.

Dec. 27, 2007 will be the 350th anniversary of this famous signing. The Flushing Remonstrance is recognized as the foundation of freedom of religion in America. Though there were only 30 signers, there are thousands of descendants living today. Though he was not there to sign the document, John Bowne was the first to "test" it when he allowed Quakers to worship in his house. Because of this, he was arrested and imprisoned by Governor Peter Stuyvesant, and sent back to Holland for trial. There he won his case for religious liberty, and returned to New York in 1663, with a ruling for Peter Stuyvesant to extend tolerance to all religious sects.

UK Outbound Ships Passenger Lists

Findmypast.com has just added another decade of records to the UK Outbound Passenger Lists currently available.

Records now include 7.5 million names in 50,553 ships passenger lists from 1890 to 1909. When it is complete, these Ships Passenger List records will cover 1890 to 1960 and are expected to contain more than 30 million individual passengers.

Tag, I'm It - Continued

As promised, here are the rest of the 5 things you probably didn't know about me (or as I think of it, things no one wants to know and I probably should never have told). The first 2 things I should probably never have told anyone are found here.

3. One of my hobbies is going to antique auctions, stores, flea markets and garage sales. I’m an avid collector. My collections include Snuff Boxes, Coffee Mills, Scales (General Store Candy scales, Hanging scales, Apothecary Scales, Postal Scales, etc), Civil War Era Photo Albums and photos, and much more! I had trouble deciding which of my collections is my favourite but I think it might be this double wheel coffee mill I found at an auction last year. My grandson is sitting beside it, so that gives you some idea of its size.

4. I am not a daredevil but I have several daredevil ancestors. My second cousin, 3 times removed (Stephen Peer) has the dubious distinction of being the only tightrope walker at Niagara Falls to fall to his death. In June 1887 Stephen outdid Blondin by walking across the Niagara River between the cantilever and suspension bridges on the smallest wire rope ever used - only 5/8ths of an inch in diameter. Three days later he fell to his death from the wire. Here’s a photo of my daredevil ancestor walking his tightrope over Niagara Falls.

5. Something else you might not know about me is that I paint – mostly watercolours – and have done some pottery and sculpting. I played French Horn in High School and our band made an LP record (remember them?) which I still have. I also learned to play classical guitar and recorders, and my husband and I used to play duets on Alto and Soprano Recorders – sitting high up on rocks on deserted islands on Georgian Bay.

My only small claim to fame is taking an art class with Canadian artist Sharon MacKinnon (when she was just starting out as an artist) and being taught watercolours by John Hartman

There’s a new game taking place among Internet bloggers. It’s a take on the game of tag that most of us played in childhood. If you are tagged, you're supposed to blog about "Five Things You Didn't Know About Me." Then you tag other bloggers.

It took awhile to think about what might be interesting or different enough to talk about, but here goes – 5 things you probably didn’t know about the Olive Tree Lady (and perhaps never wanted to know!!):

1. I have 8 grandchildren and step-grandchildren ranging in age from 1½ years to 17 years – and trying to get them all interested in genealogy has been a challenge. My 8 year old grandson Alasdair loves the Cemetery Challenge game I made up. Each summer when he and his younger sister Lilith come to visit, I give them each a large piece of paper with the name of one ancestor printed out. Then we drive to the cemetery where that ancestor is buried and we see who can find the grave first. A picnic in the cemetery follows. Of course we talk about the ancestor over our picnic lunch. Here we are at last summer’s hunt


2. I have a pet donkey (a Mammoth Jack) called Burr. His brother Ito died last year. I rescued them after they’d been taken from their owner because of neglect. Yes, put the two names together and see what you get…. Here is a picture of
Burr and Ito taken 2 years ago when we first brought them home – they are skin and bones in this photo but soon gained weight.

One Step Search Engine for Hamburg Ships Passenger lists

The Hamburg Immigration lists are online at ancestry. Steve Morse has created a one-step form to access those lists. It's the next-to-last item in the
"Other Ports" section of Steve's website.

One of the advantages of it over using the ancestry site directly is that you don't have to know as much German. Ancestry has dropdown lists for gender, marital status, and relation, all of which are in German. Those same dropdown
lists on Steve's site are all in English.

Steve Morse GOLD FORM for Ellis Island searches

Steve Morse has created a new Ellis Island search form (called the gold form) that is capable of searching through the entire 25 million passengers in the Ellis Island Database for ships passenger lists. Gold form can also search on every transcribed field.

This obsoletes the blue form that could search on every field but only for the 1 million Jewish passengers. It also obsoletes the gray form that could search for all passengers but only on four fields (name, age, year of arrival, and town).

The gold form has several new features as well. It is able to search on travelling companions (a feature which the blue form had but the gray form never did). Researchers are able to specify which fields they would like to see displayed on the results page. They can also specify how they would like to have the results sorted.

The gold form is prominently displayed in the Ellis Island section of the Steve Morse website.

Steve Morse One Steps for Ancestry Immigration FREE for November

Ancestry is offering free access to their updated online ships passenger lists and immigration records collection until November 30, 2006. This includes their updated New York passenger lists database from 1820-1957.

Steve Morse has added a OneStep Search Engine for these New York Passenger Lists. This includes

1. Passenger Search

2. Ship Arrival Search (locates the ship arrival in the manifest rolls)

3. Direct access to manifest either by date or by roll and frame

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1922


Passenger lists (RG 76) were the official immigration documents from 1865 to 1935. The lists contain information such as the name, age, country of origin, occupation and destination of each passenger. The lists are organized by port and date of arrival.

This database provides access to passenger lists for the ports of Québec (1865-1921), Halifax (1881-1912, to 1922 shortly), to Saint John (1900-1912), North Sydney (1906-1908), Vancouver (1905-1912) and Victoria (1905 to 1912), shortly.

Lists are not searchable by passenger name

Complete 1851 Canadian Census Index online soon

The FIRST complete index for the 1851 Census for all of Canada will be available for searching on October 24, 2006!

This database will enable genealogists to search the 1851 Census of Canada by name, in addition to searching by location, with superior searching and viewing capabilities.

This is the first time a comprehensive index has been made available, making it possible to track down ancestors who have been impossible to find until now without searching through reels of microfilm.

Clues in an Ancestor's Military Photo

Question posted on Rootsweb.com mailing list September 26, 2006:

I have a picture of my father as a young man in WW1 uniform. He is sitting and another young man is standing. I have my father's "sign-up" papers from the Canadian Archives. Was it the custom to have photos of brothers taken at the same time. Would this type of picture been taken before they left for Europe or when they signed up and were in uniform.

My answer:

Traditionally it was very common for soldiers to have their photos taken in uniform before leaving for overseas (England). Usually a soldier was given leave to go home before being shipped overseas and that is often when these photos were taken.

If he had brothers, or a father or son who also enlisted, they would try to have a group photo taken. This was not always possible, as leaves for individual soldiers might not be in the same time period.

Many portrait studios such as Eatons, had template mats to enclose the photo. These mats were pre-printed had spaces to fill in the soldier's name, sometimes his unit plus other details.

These mats were often brightly coloured with the words "For King & Country" or "For Service in the Great War" (it varied). Ornate frames could be purchased which had the same wording. Sometimes there would be a Canadian Maple Leaf at the top which 'stuck up' beyond the edge of the frame

If there is no photographer mark on the photo (back or front) there are clues that might help you determine a date and place.

First Clue

Determine whether or not the soldier is in a Canadian or British uniform. I realize you obtained his records from the Canadian archives but both Canadian and British uniforms were used by the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force). Men were usually issued a Canadian uniform when they enlisted, and they kept this for everything done in Canada. After they arrived in England the Canadian uniform would almost always be switched for a British one. (The reason for this switch was that the British uniforms were better quality and lasted longer)

Here are a few of the differences that might help you determine if the uniform is Canadian or British:

1. Canadian uniforms had 9 buttons on front (7 on the actual front and 1 on each front pocket) but the British one had fewer, and they were larger. There is an exception to this - if the soldier was in a Canadian Highland Regiment, his top sometimes just had 7 large buttons

2. Canadian uniforms had pointed cuffs, the British had straight (horizontal)

3. Canadian uniforms (except for the Highland ones) had stand-up collars, British uniforms did not

There are some gorgeous photos in these albums, and I am offering a quality reproduction service so as to allow all descendants to have copies of their ancestors photos. The tintypes are one-of-a-kind as that was the nature of a tintype - it substituted an iron plate for glass and is one of a kind. No copies could be made from a tintype.

Lost Faces - Photo Albums from Civil War Era

Welcome to a new corner of Olive Tree Genealogy. LOST FACES is my collection of Family Photo Albums. One of my hobbies is going to antique auctions, stores, flea markets and garage sales. Whenever I spot one of those old Photo Albums from the 1800s with family pictures, I have to buy it! I can't bear the thought that the album and photos will be lost or destroyed. Even though they aren't my ancestors, and they can be very expensive, I can't walk away without it.

Lost Faces is my way of saving these genealogy treasures and preserving historical documents. I am gradually listing all the albums I have saved, along with the list of photos and other documents (I have albums that contain funeral cards, memorial cards, obituaries, Christmas cards, and hand-written genealogies) and any research I've done on the family.

Library & Archives Canada has just released the 1851 Canadian census. It's searchable by location only. I have also put up a Census Comparison chart for the various Canadian census records found online.

Census Browser 1790-1930 USA

Steve Morse has just added a Census Browser for 1790-1930 USA Census to the Census Section of his website at http://www.stevemorse.org/

It shows you what is on the microfilm for any given year and roll number. And if you have an ancestry subscription, it lets you view the contents
of any census roll given its roll number and year.

One-Step Search Engines for UK Census 1851-1901

Steve Morse hs just created a one-step form for the UK census for all years from 1851 to 1901. It's in the "Canadian and British Census" section of his Steve Morse website.
