Update Digitized CEF Service Files WW1

Update Digitized CEF Service Files WW1
LAC (Library and Archives Canada) is bringing the full service files of all military personnel who enlisted in the Canadian military in WW1 online.

As of today, 110,260 of 640,000 files are available online via  Soldiers of the First World War: 1914–1918 database.

The Attestation papers have been available online for some time but the full service records were not. This is a wonderful addition to Canadian Military records.

Hi8 Lorine,
I enjoy your blog and find it helpful in my struggles:-) With regard to the CEF files, I have various letters of the alphabet, but have found nothing new beyond what I had found previously. What is being added that is new?

Thanks,
Craig.

Hi Craig - LAC is not digitizing the CEF files in alphabetical order. They are going by box numbers so depending where your names are filed (in what box) will indicate when they come online.

I don't know what box number they are on :-)

As the files were boxed in (more or less) alphabetical order the digitization is (more or less) alphabetical. From a quick check they seem to be somewhere between Gregg and Harris (somewhere around Box 4000). There is still a long way to go. The intention is to put the newly digitized files online every two weeks. Whether they are keeping up to this schedule I di not know.

There are many "V" surnames done (but not my Vollick names), as well as "M". According to your theory Elizabeth, all the "D" surnames should be done but they are not.

I have D names that have the Attestation papers online but not the digitized file.

Don't trust that they are going in any kind of alphabetical order.
