190 years ago the first emigrants left Norway and Stavanger to start a new and better life in US. The journey took around three mounts and 9th October the first Norwegians immigrants enter New York. 

Expedia’s Nordic Migration map charts the mass movement of Nordics to the United States from the mid 19th century up to the second half of the 20th century. This is an interactive map where you choose the country and click the arrow to watch the timeline of where settlements occurred over time.

Find Your Ancestor in Ships Passenger Lists or Naturalization Records

Visitors to my website Olive Tree Genealogy often ask me for a list of all the free ships passenger lists I have published online. Since my site is quite large and can take time to navigate to find the records, here is the list of free passenger lists and naturalization records on my site. I hope this will help those looking for an ancestor!

 Missing Friends The Missing Friends Project is abstracting the names of those who immigrated from UK to America or Canada and who were inquired about by family in various 19th Century newspapers.

 New Netherland Ships Passenger Lists Project Lists of those sailing from The Netherlands to New Netherland (now New York) 1654-1664 came from the West India Company Account Book and consist only of names of those who owed for their passage. There is no published record of those who paid for passage before leaving. Olive Tree Genealogy has reconstructed several passenger lists for these ships using other primary sources.

Before 1865 passenger lists for ships arriving at ports in Canada did not have to be archived. It is therefore a challenging time period in which to find passenger lists.

The good news is that there are alternate records such as shipping agent records, emigration agent ledger books and newspaper extracts, to name a few. These records may record your ancestor’s name showing his or her arrival.

Finding these alternate records is not an easy task. My book has gathered together all known resources for those pre-1865 passenger lists. Each item in this book provides a brief overview of what is in each record set and where it can be found. If it is online, links are included. As well I have transcribed some passenger lists exclusively for readers of this book. I have not published them online. 

I hope that this book will help genealogists hunting for an ancestor who arrived in a Canadian port before 1865.
