Announcement: FGS Conference & Door Prizes

FGS Conference February 11-14, 2015

It's nine weeks to the FGS 2015 Conference in Salt Lake City!

Are you planning to attend? You don't have to wait for the conference to win door prizes. Early door prizes will be awarded to registrants over the next two weeks.


Who is eligible to win? Eligible entries will be those who have purchased a full four-day FGS 2015 conference registration through www.FGSconference.org  prior to each drawing deadline (excluding winners from previous weeks).

Prizes to be awarded include: a one-year Ancestry.com World Explorer subscription, a one-year Findmypast World subscription, a one-year Findmypast U.S. subscription, RootsMagic software, a one-year Fold3 subscription, and a one-year Newspapers.com subscription.

Each registrant will be assigned a consecutive number in the order of registration. Winners will be selected using a random number generator and will be notified by email to the address used for the conference registration and announced here on the FGS Voice Blog. 

The deadline for entries is midnight PDT December 17, and 24. Prizes will be awarded weekly on December 18, and 25.

FGS Genealogy Conference Registration Extended

Pat Oxley, President of The Federation of Genealogical Societies, reports that FGS has extended the early registration discount for the 2010 FGS Genealogy Conference until Monday, June 21, 2010 at midnight, Central Daylight Time (CDT). Pat says, “we are happy to be able to make this offer and look forward to seeing everyone in Knoxville!” For registration details visit www.fgs.org. Anyone with an interest in genealogy and history may attend this conference August 18-21 in Knoxville, Tennessee. While the Hilton Hotel in downtown Knoxville is already full, she reports there is room at the Holiday Inn. Details are on the FGS website.

Coupled with that is another breaking item that “FGS is pleased to announce that the Archivist of the United States, David Ferriero, will be speaking at our FGS Focus on Societies Luncheon on Wednesday, August 18th. If you have already registered you can still purchase a ticket -- this luncheon is open to everyone! Mr. Ferriero will be speaking on the Citizen-Archivist and about the War of 1812 Digitization Project and will also have a question and answer period. We wish to thank Mr. Ransom Love, and the FamilySearch team for graciously welcoming the Archivist to speak in their place at this luncheon. The four day genealogical extravaganza takes place from August 18-21, 2010 at the Knoxville Convention Center. The full program is at the same website and it is chock full of lectures on techniques, records, libraries, archives and many other topics. Some of the top notch speakers from around the U.S. will be presenting these lectures. The local hosts of this event are the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Kentucky Historical Society and these states provide some of the best of the area speakers.

Ancestry.com Bringing High-Speed Scanners to FGS in Little Rock

Ancestry.com is excited to provide FGS conference attendees the opportunity to have their family records scanned, for free, on high–speed scanners.

The scanners will be available for up to 15-minute scanning sessions on Thursday, September 3, through Saturday, September 5, during the exhibit hall hours.

Scanning-session signs-ups will open each morning—sign up Thursday morning for a Thursday time slot, Friday morning for a Friday time slot, and so on. The scanning machines and sign-ups will be located in the Toltec Lobby registration area of the Statehouse Convention Center.

Details about Scanning
· Ancestry.com imaging specialists will operate the scanner
· Ancestry.com is bringing two scanners to the conference: a high–speed, loose–leaf scanner that will scan documents and photographs in full color and a planetary scanner for books and more fragile items
· Attendees will be able to scan about 100 family photographs or documents during a 15–minute session
· Scanned images will be saved to flash drives (provided at no cost by Ancestry.com) and given to attendees. (Note: Scanned images will NOT be uploaded to the Ancestry.com website by Ancestry.com personnel.)
· Due to anticipated demand, conference attendees will be able to sign up for only one scanning session during the conference

There is always a possibility that damage to older, more fragile documents may occur during the scanning process. Ancestry.com urges patrons to use their best judgment when choosing documents to be scanned.
