National Genealogical Society Announces Program for the 2016 Family History Conference

ARLINGTON, VA, 20 NOVEMBER 2015—The National Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the release of its 2016 Family History Conference program. The program, which includes more than 170 lectures, is now available online at http://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/program/ and as a sixteen-page registration brochure, which can be downloaded at http://goo.gl/w40zSO.

Nationally known speakers and subject matter experts will address a broad array of topics, including records for Florida and its neighboring states; migration into and out of the region; military records; state and federal records. Other topics will discuss genealogical research on African Americans and women; methodology; analysis and problem solving; and the use of technology, including genetics, mobile devices, and apps useful in genealogical research.

The conference will take place at the Greater Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 4–7 May 2016.   Registration opens on 1 December 2015 at http://conference.ngsgenealogy.org/register/.  A number of special events have limited seating, so register on 1 December, or as soon as possible thereafter, if you plan to attend these events.

Conference: Russia and The Netherlands in the XVIIth – XXth centuries

15th-16th of May 2013 The Institute of World History of The Russian Academy of Sciences is organizing an international conference “Russia and The Netherlands in the XVII^th – XX^th centuries: new researches and actual problems”.

The conference will be held in conjunction of “The Year of The Russian Federation in The Netherlands” and “The Year of The Kingdom of The Netherlands in Russia” in 2013. 

As a part of the conference there will be a round table concerning the study of the history of The Netherlands. All the scholars who have a special interest in the history of this country and also authors of the relevant textbooks are welcome to take part in this round table.

It will take place in the Institute of World History, the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is in the main building of RAS.

College and University Student Rates for the National Genealogical Society 2013 Family History Conference

Arlington, VA, 13 February 2013: The National Genealogical Society announces that effective 13 February 2013 qualifying students may register for discounted rates for the NGS 2013 Family History Conference, Building New Bridges, which will be held 8–11 May 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Student rates for full conference registration with flash-drive syllabus will be $50 (member) and $60 (nonmember), with no price adjustments for late or single-day registrations.

NGS offers the special student price to encourage all interested and qualifying students to see how they might incorporate genealogical methods into their research and how they may, in turn, apply knowledge from their fields to genealogy. These special rates are nearly 75% off regular registration rates.

To qualify, students must submit a letter on college or university letterhead signed by the dean or department chair confirming the student’s current admittance, good standing, and full-time status in an undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking program at a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. Students who are enrolled in diploma or certificate programs, continuing education programs, lifetime learning programs, or at institutions not regionally accredited do not qualify.

At conference check-in qualifying students must also present a current student identification and a current government-issued photo identification. The student ID must be consistent with the letter confirming student status. Qualifying students will have all rights and privileges of full conference registration.

Qualifying students interested in obtaining the student rate should scan the confirmation letter and e-mail it to the NGS conference registrar Courtney Holmes at cholmes@ngsgenealogy.org or fax it to her attention at 703-525-0052. Students may also bring all qualifying documents (the confirmation letter and both identifications) to the conference and register on-site at the LVH—Las Vegas Hotel & Casino for no additional fee.

Students who wish to purchase a print syllabus or meals or social events must pay full price for these items online before 22 April 2013 after consulting with Courtney. Students cannot obtain the special rate if they register directly through the conference website.

32nd Annual Rensselaerswijck Seminar Oct 2 and 3 in Albany New York

RUSSELL SHORTO TO BE OPENING SPEAKER AT 32nd ANNUAL RENSSELAERSWIJCK SEMINARRussell Shorto, noted author, will speak on “Oh, Henry: What Has the Hudson Year Wrought?” at the opening reception of the 32nd Annual Rensselaerswijck Seminar, Thursday, Oct. 1, at 5:30 p.m. at the NYS Museum, Albany. Admission is free.

The seminar theme
Oct. 2 and 3 the Rensselaerswijck Seminar, “Kiliaen van Rensselaer’s Colonie: The Beginning of European Settlement of the Upper Hudson,” will be in the New York State Museum’s Carole Huxley Theatre. Registration is at 9 a.m. both days.

The New Netherland Institute’s conference theme is a return to its roots as a platform for local historians to present their latest research on the only successful patroonship in New Netherland.

The members of the New Netherland Project staff will all take part. Charles T. Gehring, Ph.D., director of the project, Janny Venema, Ph.D., assistant director, and Martha D. Shattuck, Ph.D., editor, will present new information from their research specialty areas.

Genealogy and history will be twin themes in the analysis of the history of the Van Rensselaers, both from the aspect of their place in history and the succeeding generations of the family.

Shorto used the resources of the New Netherland Project in writing his 2004 book about New Netherland, “The Island at the Center of the World.” His most recent book is “Descartes’ Bones: A Skeletal History of the Conflict Between Faith and Reason.”

He will also take part on a panel of authors Friday at 10:30 a.m., with other contributors to the institute’s recent publication, “Explorers, Fortunes & Love Letters: A Window on New Netherland.” Dr. Shattuck, editor of the book, will be moderator.

A score of scholars and historians from this country and the Netherlands will present seminar topics over the two days, giving current information about the origins and history of Rensselaerwijck, a million acres that encompassed what is now Albany, Rensselaer and Columbia counties.

The annual New Netherland Dinner Saturday at the Hampton Inn will cap the two days of discussions.

Admission to the seminar is $75 for both days, $50 for one day, and $25 for students.

A special rate is offered at the Hampton Inn for those attending the conference.
