NEW: Ontario Canada Marriage Records 1936

It was fun to search the new Ontario Marriage Records brought online by Ancestry.com this week. My mom and dad married in Guelph in 1936 in a double wedding with mom's sister! It was interesting to see my mother and father's marriage.

It was new to me that my dad was a hat-maker! I knew he worked for Biltmore Hats but didn't know exactly what he did there.I thought perhaps a low-level job on an assembly line.

According to the website:

This database is a collection of approximately 3.3 million marriages recorded in Ontario, Canada between 1826 and 1928, and 1933 and 1936. The indexes contained in this collection were created by two different organizations – Ancestry and the Genealogical Research Library in Brampton, Ontario. The following list is a breakdown of the records included in this database and who created the index to them.

Indexed by Ancestry (includes images of the records):

Registrations of Marriages, 1869-1928, 1933-1935 (MS 932, Archives of Ontario)
Division Registrar Vital Statistics Records, 1858-1918 (MS 940, Archives of Ontario) [However, there are very few marriages in this record set.]
Marriage License Books, 1907-1910 (MS 945, Archives of Ontario)
Delayed Registrations of Marriages, 1892-1919 (MS 948, Archives of Ontario)
District Marriage Registers, 1801-1858 (MS 248, Archives of Ontario)
Roman Catholic Marriage Registers, 1828-1870 (MS 248, Archives of Ontario)

Indexed by Genealogical Research Library (no images available):

Registrations of Marriages, 1869-1919 (MS 932, Archives of Ontario)
County Marriage Registers, 1858-1869 (microfilm, Family History Library) (the FHL microfilm is of Archives of Ontario microfilm series MS 248, reels 5-18)

New United Kingdom 1939 Survey Records Coming Online!

The following news is pretty exciting for me personally.  In September 1939 a survey was held in the United Kingdom.

The details of the survey requested were:

  • Name
  • Sex
  • Age
  • Occupation
  • Address
  • Marital status
  • Membership of naval, military or air force reserves, auxiliary forces or civil defence services or reserves
This is a very important survey because the 1931 census for England and Wales was completely destroyed by fire (nothing remains) and there was no census taken in 1941. This 1939 survey fills that huge gap in records. But the best news?

The survey returns from England and Wales are being digitized and are expected to be available online in November 2015! This is great news for me personally as both sets of my great-grandparents should be found in it plus numerous grand aunts and uncles as well as cousins.

But my "if only" wish? If only the 1940 National Registration taken in Canada could be digitized and brought online! Right now it is accessible through a search service and a rather hefty fee.

Details on how, when and where to access the 1939 UK records are found at Plugging genealogy's 30-year gap

UPDATE: Nov. 2nd is the release date! Guess what I'll be busy doing that day....

More information on the Registration is available on The National Archives Blog.

Another Year of Ontario Vital Statistics Registrations Added!

Another Year of Ontario Vital Statistics Registrations Added!
New records on Ancestry.com include one more year of Ontario Vital Statistics Records. Now you can search 1928 marriages, 1913 births (I'm anxiously waiting for 1914 for my father's birth registration!) and 1938 deaths.

I'm very excited about this new year of records, but be aware that there are indexing errors. You may need to be creative, use wildcards, ignore first names and so on, in order to find an ancestor. Some errors that I spotted this morning in my own searches were:

"Percival" as "Persfuffal" and "Eileen" as "Celeen" and "Quebec" as " Iacbie" The images these were taken from were quite clear and legible.

That doesn't negate the value of the record set, but it does make searching them more of a challenge.
