When I began using Ancestry a few years ago I came across my surprise War Of 1812 ancestor. He was a third great grandfather, whom I didn't know much about. He served 15 days in the New York State militia in the fall of 1814 for which he later received 160 acres of land in Michigan. I still haven't positively identified his parents.

I too have an ancestor who fought for the US (Ohio) and his grandson fought in the US Civil War. I've know which Company he belonged to, but what I haven't been able to find is where he fought or in which battle.
